Exercise 22, 23, 24
22. Use a library database to choose five articles on a subject that interests you. Read the introductions.
Can you identify the hook, explanation, and promise in each essay? To what extent are the introductions successful in luring the reader? What elements attract or repel you as a reader? Can these introductions serve as positive and negative examples for your own writing?
Burcu Dogramaci starts her article “Kültür für Deutschland“ with a description of an artwork which she is then starting to put in a bigger context of art from artists who have a migration history between Turkey and Germany.
Dogramaci guides the reader from the description of an artwork by Gülşün Karamustafa to “(…) im übertragenen Sinne schafft der Broterwerb also ein Heimatgefühl. Karamustafas Arbeit zeigt deutlich, dass Fragen der Verortung durchaus eine Rolle in der Gegenwartskunst spielen können.“ This connection she made guides us to the promise of her text “Kann Migration ein Motor für andere Geschichten oder Arbeitsweisen sein?“. This question is followed by an analysis of exactly this topic. She gives examples of various artists who have a history of migration
Before she continues to make thesis statements herself she critiques the work of other researchers that attempted to do similar work as hers. For example, she talks about two exhibitions (Turkish delight, Alman Mali) that took place in Germany. She makes the points out that the artists shown in this exhibition have probably nothing in common other than their origin (?).
She then continues to precisely describe about what group of “Turkish-german” migrants she wants to talk about. So, she defines what exactly is the group/ artworks she wants to analyse. Her research is an art-historical research but also a sociological research at the same time, since the criteria for the artwork to be chosen for her research is that it was made by a person who has a migration experience - specificly: a generation that has experienced a german socialisation and therefore has a distinct view on "the turkish".
- for a 10 pages article she uses 38 references - is that too much?
- John Parish Bowles writes in the introduction to his publication “Adrian Piper: Race, Gender and Embodiment”
- Christian Kravagna, Eine Kunstgeschichte des Kontakts
23. Find the thesis statements in each of the five articles chosen in exercise 22.
Can you break them down into a structure of before and aer? What is the condion of stability where the essay begins, and where does it promise to take the reader?
24. Choosethreecitaons from the arcle with your favorite introducon, from exercise 22.
Based on the informaon in the citaon, what can you learn about the context of thearcle?
"Dabei fügt sich in das Selbstverständnis jedes Einzelnen auch das Bild, das andere von ihm haben."
"Auf Zuschreibungen basieren Vorstellungen einer kollektiven Identität und äußeren Zeichen ausgeht: Der türkisch Mann trägt Schnurrbart, die türkische Frau Kopftuch. Eine Emanzipation von diesen Codes wird von anderen als positiv und als Hinweis auf die Assimilationsbereitschaft gewertet."
