Exercises 11,12,13

11. Describe something. Yes, anything. Write it down. Where does the process of description take you? Do you learn something about the thing you describe?

(descriptive paragraph)

The pillow is a closed pocket made out of fabric which functions as a case. It can be different fabrics like cotton, linen or some plastic formula. Inside of this case there is material which has a soft, fluffy, malleable form. This material can also be different things like actual feathers from geese or a plastic formula. Usually today a pillow has a square or rectangular form, but it can have all types of forms. The pillow is used as something comforting for when we lay or sit down.

12. Transform the description in Exercise 11 into a paragraph expressing a deductive argument. Use this to build a paragraph structured through inductive reasoning.

A simple pillow allows people to endure in positions that are actually not comfortable for a long time. The pillow is a closed pocket made out of fabric which functions as a case. It can be different fabrics like cotton, linen or a plastic formula. Inside of this case there is material which has a soft, fluffy, malleable form. This material can also be different things like actual feather from geese or a plastic formula. Usually today a pillow has a square or rectangular form, but it can have all types of forms. The pillow is used as something comforting for when we lay or sit down.

13. Use the inductively argued paragraph in exercise 12 as a springboard into a discussion related to the object. What associations do you have with the object that might allow it to relate to a larger issue? Is this possible with any object? Does every object convey meaning?

The importance of having the comfort from sitting on a pillow becomes very obvious during the late-pandemic time we are in. Many employees are working from home where they are sitting on usual dinner table chairs which often don’t have cushions. These are not made for sitting on them up to eight hours per day. It turned out within the last months that most employers didn’t care to provide proper desk chairs – which is not a surprise to many workers. Handling the usual amount of work of a full-time job, many employees are now facing serious back problems.
